Obituary for Gilbert Smith
Gilbert Smith, 88, died September 20, 2017.

Gilbert Carter Smith was born on August 27, 1929 in Lake Cormorant, Mississippi as the oldest of 3 children from the union of John Smith and Alice Lucinda Carter. He celebrated his 88th birthday and that very week became ill. He was hospitalized a week later. Then, after giving it a good fight, a rare disease won the battle. But, God who loves him most, rewarded him for a good life by removing all his pain and all his concerns, and carried him on angelic wings to his heavenly home.

Gilbert confessed his belief in Christ early in life and spent most of his life as a member of Martin Temple Memorial C.M.E. church. Gilbert was a man of strong beliefs who was happy being himself. His memorial celebration reflects his ideals and zeal for enjoying life. Gilbert He wouldn’t hesitate to say, “I don’t know about you, but I’m satisfied with my relationship with God.”
He was 18 but she was only 17 so, on December 15, 1947, he crossed the Mississippi River and traveled to Marion, Arkansas in a 1947 Plymouth to marry the love of his life, Viva Lee Moore. To this union was born 4 children, one girl and three boys. He prayed that God allow him to live to see his kids grow up, because his daddy died when he was just 4 years old, he “didn’t have no daddy.” He didn’t ask God to make his children beautiful, rich or famous, but asked that they just be decent human beings. He lived his life demonstrating to his kids and everyone around him, ways to be decent.

A ridiculously loyal Dallas Cowboys fan, he cried when they lost and jumped with joy when they won and dared anyone to say anything bad about (his) cowboys.

Gilbert was a great man, a great husband, and a great father! He said, “I work hard, play hard and love hard! I live and enjoy every day because I know tomorrow is not promised to nobody!”
He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife of almost 70 years, Viva Lee Moore Smith; 1 daughter, Genwyl Ann Glover; 3 sons Dewayne Carter (Sonya), Hilon Victor (Linda), Brondon Gilbert (Bettye); 6 grandchildren, Maya, Iman, Nanecia (Fred Willis), Kylon, Kandice, Kristian, two great-granddaughters, Zoe and Kelsey; one brother in law, Larry J. Moore plus a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, too numerous to name, extended family and friends.
