Cornell Gray was born in Memphis, Tennessee on February 1, 1951 as the only child to George and Minnie Ann Gray. He attended Booker T. Washington High School and later attended Creighton University. He retired from the United States Army as an E7 First Class, and later from the United States Postal Service.
Cornell was a joyous man with an infectious laugh that lit up any room. He was a lover of music with a record/CD collection to match. In 1967, he met the love of his life – Lawshe’ Morris Gray while at a high school dance. While he wasn’t the best dancer, his wardrobe was sharper than a tack and caught his soon-to-be bride’s attention. He approached Lawshe’ for a dance… and the rest (as they say) is history. They would go on to marry on September 13, 1974 in a private ceremony. In 1969, they gave birth to his namesake, and pride of his life - Cornell Derrell Gray. Two years later in 1971, his babygirl, LaTara Gray Harris was born.
Cornell was a man of integrity and valued his role as a husband, father, and friend. He joined the United States Army and proudly served for 22 years before retiring. He would take his family from Kentucky to Texas to California to Hawaii, and finally to Washington, DC where he would retire with full honors. Cornell served as a Medic for the United States Army, and proudly mentored many soldiers during his tenure.
On November 23, 2021, he would be called home. He leaves behind his wife of 47 years – Lawshe’ Gray, son – Cornell Gray, daughter – LaTara Gray Harris, Grandchildren – NaTasha Gray , Ria Freeman, Nia Gray , Maia Freeman, Carmen Harris, Christian Harris, and Great Grandchildren – Caiden, Carter, and Yara. Sister-In-Laws – Andrea Morris, Cynthia Morris, and Brenda Morris. Brother In Law’s – Michael Morris, Clinton Love. Aunts - Earnestine Shepherd, Rosetta S. Perkins, Josephine Perkins. A host of cousins, family and friends. His first grandson – Cornell “DJ” Gray preceded him in death and will forever remain one of his greatest treasures.
