Obituary for Doris Parker Hurd
Doris Parker Hurd, age 95, died February 21, 2021.
Doris Parker Hurd, daughter of the late John Parker and Avar S. Parker (later “Pipkin”) and widow of Leon Edwin Hurd, Sr., was born on May 15, 1925, in Macon, Tennessee. She graduated from Manassas High School in 1944 where she was a majorette and member of other school organizations. Doris was known to be a sweet, quiet, and unassuming young lady. She stole the heart of Leon Hurd, and they secretly married in 1943.
Doris pursued a career in the healthcare profession and worked as a receptionist at a dentist’s office, a hospital nurse’s aide, and a laboratory tech. She later retired to become a full-time homemaker. Doris has been a dedicated member of Parkway Gardens United Presbyterian Church for over fifteen years. For many years, she was a member of Providence A.M.E. Church.
Preceded in death by her husband and by their son, Leon Edwin Hurd, Jr., Doris entered into rest on February 21, 2021. She leaves her children, Avar Hurd James (Bill), Dr. William Charles Hurd (Rhynette), and Mildred Hurd Langston; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be at Serenity Funeral Home at 1638 Sycamore View Road, Memphis from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2021. The family will have a private graveside service. Pallbearers: Dr. Lawrence Madlock, Dr. Joseph Mclaurin, Stanley Morgan, Willie B.Love, Fred Lenoir, James Thompson and Tony Womeudu.
