Obituary for Jerry Peck
Jerry W. Peck, the prominent Memphis businessman, died on September 21, 2021. He was 85.
Born in Cache, Arkansas, on January 5, 1936, to John G. Peck and Margaret Camper Peck. Jerry was the youngest of their six children. The family moved to Memphis when Jerry was an infant and he remained here for the rest of his life. He attended E.E. Jeter Elementary School and graduated in 1955 from Millington High School, where he was a star player on the football team. Shortly thereafter he married the only girl who ever caught his eye, Joyce Brasher, of Milan, Tennessee. Theirs was a truly happy marriage for 60 years, Jerry called Joyce “my bride”. She predeceased him in 2015. Jerry and Joyce had two sons, who survived him, Jerry Steven Peck (Edith) and Scott Peck, both of Memphis. Jerry also leaves six grandchildren: Morgan Benett (Tyler), Slater Peck, Taylor Peck, Jason Peck, Paul Peck, and Amber Eclavea (Lee). He also leaves eight great-grandchildren: Jaxon, Ariana, Scotty, Josie, Rohde, Luke, James, and Oakley.
He served in the armed forces. A successful, self-made businessman, Jerry was a pioneer in the Sign and Outdoor Advertising business in Memphis. He founded Peck Signs in 1967, followed by Peck Outdoors in 1972.
Jerry was for many years a fixture on the Memphis political scene, actively supporting candidates of both parties, and making his influence felt in statewide races. He was universally admired as a man who valued his friendships, respected his adversaries, and honored his commitments. Jerry had no boundaries and was a friend to all. He brought ethnic groups together to work as one, He was a pathway to making Memphis a better city.
Jerry lived his life as a devoted Christian, who faithfully followed the commandment to tithe. He and Joyce were active in the life of the churches they attended,-first Oaklawn Baptist Church, then Broadmore Baptist Church, and finally Second Baptist (which became Cross Point Baptist Church of Millington).
