Obituary for Joyce Marie Garrett
Joyce Marie Garrett, 76, died October 15, 2019.

Joyce Marie Davis Garrett was born March 13, 1943 in Tylertown, MS to James and Muriel “Sweet” Davis. She was the second of five children. Joyce married her loving husband Wylie Preston Garrett on March 25, 1961. They were married for 42 years and had 5 children of their own: Rodney Gariell, Terrence Preston, Jill Allyson, Karen Mazie Denise, and Monica Nicole.
Joyce, along with her sisters and brother, grew up on Stovall Street in Hammond, LA. She attended public schools and graduated from Greenville Park High School. She also enrolled in courses at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond. Joyce grew up serving the Lord our God at Greater Saint James AME Church. Upon her marriage to Wylie, she attended First Bethel Independence Methodist Church in Hammond. While there, Joyce set out to work for change in her church and community. She was a dedicated and active church member, serving as a matron in the youth and teen choirs, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, as well as serving as a Deacon’s wife. She made faith the center of her life and the center of her family’s life in the Garrett Household.
In the community, Joyce had several careers in her adult life. After finishing high school, she became a cashier at Winn Dixie Grocery Store, then she moved on to becoming a bank teller at Citizen’s National Bank. As a teller at the drive-up window and eventually inside the bank, Joyce was aware of her role as a black woman in banking. At that time, she was the second African - American Woman to work at a bank in Hammond, LA in the early 1970s. At the same time, she began her life-long career in education by becoming a substitute teacher in the Hammond Public School System. From K-12, Joyce’s services were requested. She enjoyed a unique relationship with each and every principal at the schools she supported. She worked daily in the schools from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s.
Throughout her work-life and church-life, her focus was on her family. She gave her heart and soul to her loving husband and family. She managed a home with love, strength, determination, and faith. Joyce made sure her children were loved, encouraged, educated, and celebrated by highlighting birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. She made her home a safe place for her family and taught her kids how to laugh, BBQ, cook, dress for success, pray, and to cheerfully give. She was there for her family, friends, church, and community.
Joyce was brave and comfortable in herself and her faith. She could do everything from playing the piano, helping to cut the grass, planting gardens, sewing outfits for her family, and decorating for every holiday season.
JOHN 14:3 KJV “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I come again, and will receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
Joyce Marie Davis Garrett went home to be with The Lord on October 15, 2019. She was proceeded in death by Wylie, her husband, Rodney, her eldest son, and her parents, James and Muriel. Joyce is survived by her sisters Louise, Carolyn, Beverly, and her brother Leon. She is also survived by her children Terrence (Tatricia) Garrett, Jill Session, Karen (David) Black, Monica (Richard) Butler, daughter-in-law Lisa (Rodney) Garrett, 12 grandchildren (Lacey, Jonathan, Baylen, Shauna, Joshua, Zachery, Camille, Jackson, Jaden, Kylie, Jessi, and Morgan), 4 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.
