Obituary for Katherine Kirk
Katherine Kirk, 77, died December 19, 2016.

Katherine Moore Kirk, devoted wife of the late County Commissioner, Dr. Cleo C. Kirk, was granted her angel wings on December 19, 2016. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends. Mrs. Kirk, a native of Dyersburg, Tennessee relocated to Memphis in 1965 where her family grew to include two beautiful daughters, Dr. Kitt Lizette Kirk and Attorney Kathy Lynn Kirk-Johnson.

Mrs. Kirk dedicated her life as a community activist and government servant. Spanning a thirty-year career, she served the community in various capacities as a successful leader in Local, State, and National organizations. Some of Mrs. Kirk’s organizations where she either was an officer or Board Member include Past Board Member for the NAACP; local, State and National Executive Secretary of the Pan-Tennessee and National Dental Auxiliaries; Vice President and two term President of the National Dental Auxiliary; Member of Shelby County Board of Review; Past President and Past Vice-President of The Memphis (TN) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated; National Black Historic Foundation (Charter Member); LaRose School Link to Leaders Program; Children’s Defense Fund; Board Member of the Miss Black Memphis Pageant; Memphis Arts Council, Administration Committee for the YWCA; Member of Jack and Jill Association of America; served as Co-Chair of the LeMoyne Owen United Negro College Fund Drive; Leadership Memphis; National Smart Set, (Inaugural Member) Girl Scout Heart of the South Community Advisory Board; and, retiring her career as Chief Administrative Officer, Shelby County Clerk’s Office.

Beyond serving the Shelby County and Memphis Community, Mrs. Kirk strongest love was her late husband and family. She was known to all for her elegant style, captivating laugh and the some of the best cooking in the area. She graciously shared her cooking style and family recipes handed down through the generations in two published cook books, Mrs. Kirk regularly enjoyed playing bridge as a member of the Les Femme Savante Bridge Club

Mrs. Kirk received her Associate Degree from LeMoyne Owen College (1960); received her BA in Education from D.C. Teacher’s College (District of Columbia University) (1962); and, a BA in Business Administration from Atlantic Business College, Washington, D.C. (1963).

Mrs. Kirk was a faithful member of Greater St. Paul Baptist Church where she and her family have been strong and dedicated parishioners since 1965 while serving in numerous roles within the Church.

Mrs. Kirk is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Cleo C. Kirk, her brother, Johnny Moore, and sister Ernestine Moore. She leaves a proud legacy in her family, daughters Dr. Kitt Lizette Kirk and Attorney Kathy Lynn Kirk-Johnson; grandchildren Gavin and Kingston Johnson; sisters Leora Maze (Dyersburg, TN), Lena Delaney (Milwaukee, WI); brothers Dave Moore (Landover, MD), Robert Moore (Lexington, KY), Marvin Townsend (Memphis, TN) and Andy Moore (Dyersburg, TN); a host of nieces and nephews and close family friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 3-5:30 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Home, 1638 Sycamore View Rd., Memphis TN 38134 and Funeral Services on Thursday, December 29, 2016 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church, 2124 E. Holmes Rd., Memphis, TN 38116. Interment, Memorial Park Southwoods Cemetery
