Obituary for Mattie Freeman
Mattie M. Freeman, 93, died December 12, 2018.

On October 20, 1925, in Memphis, Tennessee, the Lord blessed Jethro and E.C. McGlown with a beautiful baby girl named Mattie Marie McGlown. She was the epitome of love from the beginning of her life until the end. She touched and impacted many lives during her lifetime.

Affectionately called mom, momma, mother, grandma and Aunt Mattie, she was the strong, yet loving matriarch of our family. Holding and binding us together with many memories and lots of love. Her love of God and family was demonstrated not only in words, but also in her deeds. She opened her doors to many people, sharing meals and reaching out to those in need during the holiday season. She used her home for Bible Study for those in the community. She was actively involved in a Prison Outreach Ministry, spreading the word to those in prison.

She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in the name of Jesus at Greenwood CME Church. She served on the Missionary Society, Stewardess Board, taught Sunday School Class and was a member of the choir until her illness in 2011.She was a member of the Faith Witness and Sharing Group, under the leadership of Reverend N. Charles Thomas. She loved her church family. She was united in Holy Matrimony to Nick Freeman, where she raised and cared for nine children, including her baby sister. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.

As a young woman, she successfully completed The State Board Examination to be a Licensed Cosmetologist, where she accomplished her goal of setting up her own shop. She was an active Civil Rights Advocate. In 1961, she voluntarily became involved in the desegregation of the Memphis School System, known as "The Memphis 13".In 1967, she actively campaigned for AW Willis for the mayoral candidacy for Memphis, Tennessee. In 1963, she attended the March on Washington, a massive protest for economic and civil rights for African Americans. She attended Mason Temple in 1968 to hear the iconic "I've been to the mountaintop speech" by Dr. Martin Luther King. Mrs. Freeman served as a School Crossing Guard for twenty-five years. She received a vision from God to form a Praise and Dance Ministry with her grandchildren which was named; The McGlown Family Mine and Dance Ministry. They shared their love of God visiting many churches throughout the Memphis and Mid-South area.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories, four daughters; Eva Ronelle Doggett (Thomas), E.C. Fentress, who preceded her in death; Charlotte Ruby Draper (Anthony), and Cheryl Joyce Artis, Six sons; Emmitt Freeman, Jethro Freeman, who preceded her in death; Nick, Jr., Nathaniel Freeman, Gregory Freeman, and Mark Freeman (Kimberly) all of Memphis.
