William L. Lumpkin was born on February 26, 1959, to Lawrence Lumpkin Jr. and Inez Smith in Memphis Tennessee.
Bill was adventurous and an exceptional child captivated with creative ideas. Even at a young age, he spent many hours building things from the ideas he created. Understanding the intricate part of how things worked was a mainstay in his young life. This unique trait continued to evolve significantly in his adult life which included his love for writing poetry.
Bill received his primary and secondary education in the Memphis Public School system. He ran track and played football while attending Wooddale High School. He was also involved in student affairs and served as President of the National Honor Society. He furthered his education at the University of Memphis obtaining a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Accounting (B.B.A). In addition, he acquired a State of Illinois Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and earned his Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from DeVry University, where he received distinguished academic honors graduating with a 4.0 G.P.A. He also completed the Cornell University School of Hotel Management Certification Program.
Bill began his professional career with the Hyatt Hotels Corporation more than 30 years ago in Memphis, where he held various auditing and accounting positions to include his most recent role as Vice President, Special Projects. During his career, Bill received many accolades of recognition including the Director of Finance of the Year award. He was also named in Who’s Who in Black Chicago and Top African Americans in the Hospitality Industry.
As a faithful servant of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Bill gave his life to the Lord as a young youth. As an adult, he continued his spiritual journey as a member of Trinity United Church of Christ where he served in the Married Couples Ministry for several years. He devoted his time, talents and treasures to ensure success of the ministry program, all while enriching the lives of all he encountered along his life’s journey. In addition to serving the Lord, Bill found enjoyment playing golf, attending professional sporting events and running.
Bill was a devoted husband, father, son and brother. He is survived by his devoted wife of 19 years, Linda Lumpkin, his loving daughter, Latrice Robinson (Walter Sr.), two grandsons, Jason and Walter Jr., who all will dearly miss their loving and caring relationship with him. He also leaves to cherish his memory his parents; Lawrence and Inez, sisters; Deborah (Alphonso), Laura, Yolonda, Chrystal (Charles), brother; Larry and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Memorial Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at Serenity Funeral Home, 1638 Sycamore View Rd., Memphis, TN 38134.
